Melvin Armando Funes-Canales, Illegal Re-Entry, Texas 2024

Austin, TX – In a shocking case of disregard for the law, Melvin Armando Funes-Canales, a Honduran national, has been arrested and charged with illegal re-entry in Texas.

According to court documents, Funes-Canales was transferred into federal custody in Austin after being located in the Williamson County jail on or about July 16, 2024. He was initially detained for alleged possession of a controlled substance.

An investigation revealed that Funes-Canales had been previously removed from the U.S. to Honduras on or about Oct. 9, 2020, and had also been deported on five other occasions. Furthermore, he was previously convicted of burglary, grand theft, and illegal re-entry.

Funes-Canales is now facing a serious charge with illegal re-entry, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison if convicted. However, it is up to the federal district court judge to determine the sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The case is being investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Harding prosecuting the case. U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza for the Western District of Texas made the announcement.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation and Funes-Canales is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly be closely watched by law enforcement officials and the community at large.

Funes-Canales’ case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of ignoring the law and attempting to re-enter the country illegally. With his previous convictions and removals, he should have been aware of the risks involved.

As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: Funes-Canales’ actions have put him at the center of a high-stakes battle between immigration authorities and those who seek to evade the law.
