MEMPHIS, TN – In a stunning display of justice, Jaylen Simpson, 23, was sentenced to over 18 years in federal prison today for carjacking and the shooting of a 60-year-old victim. The brutal attack occurred on May 16, 2024, when Simpson, armed with a stolen Walther Creed 9mm pistol, ambushed the elderly man as he stepped outside his home.
Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti condemned the crime, stating, ‘This was a calculated and brutal act of violence against an unsuspecting man in his own front yard in broad daylight.’ Simpson’s premeditated actions were met with swift law enforcement response that led to his capture after a three-hour pursuit.
According to court documents, Simpson shot the victim in the stomach before stealing his car keys. The incident was captured on home surveillance footage, showing the defendant entering the victim’s vehicle while still holding the firearm. The elderly man was hospitalized for four weeks and required multiple surgeries to recover from the gunshot wound.
Simpson pleaded guilty to carjacking resulting in serious bodily injury and discharge of a firearm before trial. He admitted to waiting outside the victim’s home, discharging the firearm, and stealing the vehicle. The ATF, along with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners, played a crucial role in investigating and prosecuting this case.
Acting Special Agent in Charge Jason Stankiewicz emphasized the commitment to public safety, noting, ‘The ATF remains committed to combating violent crime and swiftly bringing these individuals to justice.’ This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods efforts targeting violent crimes in Memphis and surrounding areas.
