Robert Haley, Bank Heists, Tennessee 2023

A string of brazen bank robberies shook the Memphis area in 2023, leaving a trail of fear and financial losses in its wake. Now, four men are facing the music, accused of conspiring to rob six banks and pulling off the heists.

Robert Haley, 44, Devin Hinds, 34, Courtney Trenell, 32, and Monterrio Trenell, 28, are the Memphis four accused of masterminding the string of bank robberies. According to a federal indictment unsealed this week, the quartet allegedly robbed banks in Memphis, Tennessee, between April and December 2023.

The indictment charges the four men with conspiracy to commit bank robberies and the commission of six specific bank robberies:

Truist Bank, Poplar Avenue, on August 11, 2023

First Horizon Bank, N. Germantown Parkway, on October 20, 2023

Bank of Bartlett, Trinity Road, on October 20, 2023

First Horizon Bank, N. Watkins Street, on October 25, 2023

Independent Bank, Union Avenue, on December 22, 2023

United States Attorney Kevin G. Ritz said the alleged crimes carry serious penalties and vowed to continue fighting violent crime with federal tools.

Special Agent in Charge Douglas S. DePodesta of the Memphis Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation praised the collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.

If convicted, Hinds and Haley face up to life in prison and up to five years of supervised release, while Courtney Trenell and Monterrio Trenell face sentences of five years in prison and up to three years of supervised release. All defendants face up to a $250,000 fine.

The case is pending before Senior United States District Judge Jon P. McCalla in Memphis, Tennessee. The investigation is being led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Safe Streets Task Force and the Memphis Police Department. The charges and allegations contained in the indictment are merely accusations of criminal conduct, not evidence. The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted through due process of law.

Assistant United States Attorney Greg Wagner and Department of Justice Trial Attorney Aaron Henricks are prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
