MEMPHIS, TN – A federal judge has handed down a stiff sentence to a Memphis man for his role in the attempted robbery of a Boost Mobile store in 2017.
Lamar Clancy, 31, was recently resentenced to 20 years in federal prison for his crimes, after a series of events that include a jury trial and changes in the law. United States Attorney Kevin G. Ritz announced the sentence today.
According to the DOJ, on December 8, 2017, Clancy and an accomplice entered a Boost Mobile store in Memphis, armed with guns and wearing ski masks. They pointed their weapons at the three employees behind the counter, stating, “You know what time it is,” before opening fire. Two of the employees returned fire, and a third, unarmed employee was shot in the knee.
The shooting also endangered a customer and three minor children who had been waiting in a vehicle in the parking lot. After the shooting, Clancy and his accomplice fled the scene.
Clancy was originally sentenced in November 2019, but due to changes in the law that went into effect in 2022, his firearm conviction was vacated, and the district court scheduled a resentencing hearing. At that hearing, United States District Court Judge John T. Fowlkes sentenced Clancy to 240 months incarceration with the Bureau of Prisons, followed by 3 years of supervised release.
Thanking Assistant United States Attorney Naya Bedini for her work on the case, United States Attorney Ritz highlighted the impact of the sentence on the community. “This case is a testament to our commitment to reducing violent crime and gun violence in our communities,” he said.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Memphis Police Department, and is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer.
United States Attorney Ritz also thanked the law enforcement partners who investigated the case. “We appreciate the hard work and dedication of our law enforcement partners in bringing this case to justice,” he said.
