A federal judge has slammed the book on a Memphis man’s freedom, sentencing him to over 17 years in prison for a laundry list of crimes. Charlie Gibson, a career offender, was found guilty of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute it.
According to court documents, Gibson’s troubles began in December 2021 when he was stopped by security guards at a local apartment complex for loitering. During the detention, the guards found a Glock .40 caliber pistol, approximately 250 grams of marijuana, and three digital scales on him. The discovery led to his arrest by the Memphis Police Department.
However, Gibson’s antics didn’t end there. In July 2022, he found himself at the center of a violent altercation in Cordova, Tennessee. Deputies responded to an assault call and spotted Gibson driving a gray Nissan. When ordered to stop, Gibson refused and drove forward, striking a deputy who had rolled onto the hood of the vehicle. The deputy fired several rounds through the windshield, striking Gibson, who crashed the vehicle shortly thereafter. A Glock .40 caliber pistol was later found on the driver’s side floorboard of his vehicle.
Gibson’s charges from both incidents were combined into a superseding indictment in November 2023. After a two-day trial in February 2024, federal jurors found him guilty of two counts of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, one count of marijuana possession with intent to distribute, and one count of possession of a firearm during commission of a dangerous felony.
United States District Court Judge Sheryl H. Lipman sentenced Gibson to a total of 210 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. With no parole available in the federal system, Gibson will have to serve his entire sentence.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and community members. United States Attorney Kevin G. Ritz thanked the PSN Gun Task Force, Memphis Police Department, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for their work on the case.
