McALLEN, Texas – A grim reminder of the cost of drug trafficking hit a Mercedes man this week as he was sentenced to spend over two decades behind bars for his role in transporting 84 kilograms of cocaine. Martin Perez, 37, from Mercedes, Texas, pleaded guilty on March 31, 2016, to possession with intent to distribute the highly lucrative drug.
In a stern rebuke, Senior U.S. District Judge Janice Graham Jack sentenced Perez to a total of 262 months in federal prison, followed by ten years of supervised release. The judge highlighted Perez’s previous convictions for possessing with the intent to distribute marijuana in 2005 and his prior aggravated assault conviction as factors in determining the sentence.
The crime came to light on February 1, 2016, when a routine traffic stop in Kleberg County resulted in a dramatic discovery. Perez was driving a tractor-trailer when he was stopped for a violation. A meticulous search of the trailer revealed a hidden compartment containing nearly 84 kilograms of cocaine, a significant seizure that authorities believe was part of a larger drug trafficking operation.
Perez will remain in custody pending transfer to a federal Bureau of Prisons facility. The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, and the Kleberg County Sheriff’s Office, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Leonard prosecuted the case.
