Assault with a Metal Bar: 2 Pine Ridge Men Convicted
Two Pine Ridge men have been found guilty of a brutal assault that left a victim with severe injuries.
Wesley Running Shield, 28, and Michael Alford, 33, both of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, were convicted of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury following a four-day federal jury trial in Rapid City, South Dakota.
The convictions stem from an incident on June 12, 2014, where the defendants used a metal bar to break the victim’s leg and hand, and caused a large laceration on his head.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sarah B. Collins and Kathryn N. Rich.
The defendants now face up to 10 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for June 5, 2015. The defendants were remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
Details of the assault remain disturbing, with the defendants using a metal bar to inflict severe injuries on the victim. The convictions serve as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
