WHITE PLAINS, NY – A ruthless Bronx-Yonkers shooter and carjacker has been put behind bars for his crimes. Christopher Smith, 28, of Mount Vernon, New York, was sentenced to eight years in prison for his role in two shootings and an armed carjacking that terrorized the streets of the Bronx and Yonkers in 2022.
According to the charges, Smith, aka ‘Mad Max’, ‘Christopher Johnson’, ‘Trouble’, and ‘Max’, committed the crimes over a two-month period in the fall of 2022. The first incident occurred in September 2022, when Smith brandished a black handgun with a light blue handle and demanded that a group of men sell drugs for him. When they refused, Smith fired his gun twice in the vicinity of the group, striking no one.
The second shooting occurred in November 2022, when Smith argued with a friend over poor-quality narcotics and shot at him from the outside balcony of their apartment in the Bronx. Smith then fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of terror and destruction.
Just days before, Smith had attempted to carjack a 70-year-old woman’s Jeep, forcing her to hand over the keys at gunpoint. He sped off in the stolen vehicle, leaving the woman shaken but unharmed. The brazen carjacking was just the latest in a string of crimes committed by Smith, who showed no regard for human life or the law.
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams praised the outstanding investigative work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New York City Police Department, the Mount Vernon Police Department, the Yonkers Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in bringing Smith to justice.
“Chris Smith committed two dangerous shootings and an armed carjacking over the span of two months,” Williams said. “He put New Yorkers’ lives in jeopardy and brazenly flouted the rule of law. This Office remains steadfast in its commitment to ending the scourge of gun violence on the streets of New York City and will continue to hold accountable those who endanger public spaces.”
Smith’s sentence includes eight years in prison and three years of supervised release. The case is being handled by the Office’s General Crimes Unit, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Amanda C. Weingarten and Katherine Cheng leading the prosecution.
As Smith sits behind bars, the community can breathe a sigh of relief. But the reality is that Smith’s crimes are a symptom of a larger problem – the scourge of gun violence that plagues our city. Until we address the root causes of this violence, we will continue to see innocent lives lost and families torn apart.
