Mathew Grover, Methamphetamine Trafficking, Idaho 2024

BOISE, ID – Mathew Grover, 28, of Nampa, Idaho, is staring down a lengthy federal sentence after pleading guilty today to charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and unlawful possession of ammunition. The bust, a culmination of a probe involving multiple agencies, reveals a pattern of criminal behavior for Grover, who was already a convicted felon.

According to court documents, Grover was initially arrested on October 5, 2016, by Nampa Police officers acting on a federal warrant related to violations of his supervised release from a previous federal case. A subsequent search of his Nampa residence, conducted by U.S. Probation officers alongside Nampa PD, turned up a significant stash: $4,709 in cash and 42.09 grams of pure methamphetamine, concealed within a plastic bag. The search didn’t stop there.

Officers also discovered two rounds of 16-gauge ammunition and five rounds of 12-gauge ammunition in Grover’s garage. This discovery carried heavy weight, as Grover had already been convicted on January 9, 2012, of conspiracy to participate in a racketeering enterprise and unlawful possession of a firearm – a conviction that explicitly prohibited him from possessing any firearms or ammunition. This wasn’t a simple oversight; it was a brazen disregard for the law.

As part of a plea agreement, Grover will also admit to numerous violations of his supervised release stemming from the 2012 racketeering conviction. This adds another layer of severity to his situation, indicating a history of failing to comply with court-ordered conditions. The Acting U.S. Attorney Rafael Gonzalez’s office is pushing for a substantial penalty.

The potential penalties are steep. Possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine carries a maximum sentence of twenty years in prison, a minimum of three years of supervised release, and a $1,000,000 fine. The unlawful possession of ammunition charge adds another ten years behind bars, up to three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. Grover is set to be sentenced on June 27, 2017, before Chief U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill.

This case is the result of a joint investigation by the United States Probation Office and the Treasure Valley Metro Violent Crime Task Force – a robust multi-agency operation formed eleven years ago. The Task Force includes the FBI, ATF, Boise Police Department, Ada County Sheriff’s Office, Caldwell Police Department, Nampa Police Department, Meridian Police Department, Canyon County Sheriff’s Office, and the Idaho Department of Probation and Parole. Their focus is on dismantling complex criminal gangs, and Grover’s operation clearly fell within their sights.
