Rodney Cook, Possession of Firearm by Illegal Drug User, Iowa 2020

DENISON, IA – A Florida man is headed to federal prison after a late-night standoff with Denison police revealed a dangerous cocktail of drugs and firearms. Rodney Cook, 40, of Starke, Florida, was sentenced to 24 months behind bars after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by an illegal drug user on August 24, 2020.

The incident unfolded on May 5, 2019, when officers responded to reports of gunshots fired from a room at the Park Motel. While the shooter wasn’t immediately visible, police found the door to a room ajar and a broken window. Inside, they discovered Rodney Cook reloading a revolver. Cook admitted to using methamphetamine earlier in the day and possessing more of the drug within the room. He claimed he fired the weapon to scare people away.

A search of the motel room turned up not only methamphetamine but a second handgun. This wasn’t Cook’s first brush with the law. Court records show he has prior misdemeanor convictions for violence, including an assault and battery on a law enforcement officer – a detail that undoubtedly weighed heavily in Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand’s sentencing decision. The 24-month sentence is followed by a mandatory 3-year term of supervised release; there’s no parole in the federal system.

Cook is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals, awaiting transfer to a designated federal prison facility. This case isn’t an isolated incident, but part of a broader federal initiative aimed at curbing violent crime. It falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice program focusing on the most dangerous offenders and bolstering community-based prevention and reentry programs.

Federal prosecutors also highlighted that this prosecution is part of Project Guardian, a Department of Justice initiative dedicated to reducing gun violence and enforcing federal firearms laws. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Denison, Iowa Police Department and the Tri-State Drug Task Force, a multi-agency team comprised of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Sioux City Police, Homeland Security Investigations, and several other state and federal agencies. Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild prosecuted the case.
