Methamphetamine Trafficking and Gun Charges Rock West Virginia Community
WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA – James Bailey, a 34-year-old resident of Clarksburg, has admitted to selling methamphetamine and possessing a firearm during a drug offense in Harrison County in January 2018, according to United States Attorney Bill Powell.
Bailey, 34, pled guilty to one count of “Distribution of Methamphetamine,” and one count of “Use of a Firearm During and in Relation to a Drug Offense.” The plea deal carries a significant price: up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1,000,000 for the first count, and up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for the second count.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that has been successful in reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made addressing rising violent crime a top priority, and the reinvigoration of PSN in 2017 is a key part of that effort.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Zelda E. Wesley is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Greater Harrison County Drug & Violent Crimes Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative, investigated the crime.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the case. Bailey now faces the possibility of significant time behind bars and financial penalties for his crimes.
The indictment highlights the ongoing struggle against methamphetamine trafficking in West Virginia. As the state continues to grapple with the opioid epidemic, cases like Bailey’s serve as a reminder of the need for continued law enforcement efforts to combat the flow of illicit substances into the community.
