Meth Kingpin Gets 14 Years
AMARILLO, Texas – Juan Daniel Mares, 40, of Amarillo, Texas, has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for his role in a massive methamphetamine distribution ring.
According to court documents, Mares agreed to meet with an undercover Texas Public Safety agent at a Walmart store in Canton, Texas, and sell him one pound of methamphetamine on September 10, 2015. The undercover agent posed as a buyer and Mares sold him 446 grams of the highly addictive and dangerous drug in exchange for $6,100.
Prosecutors say that Mares has been in custody since his arrest on September 13, 2016, and pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine in January 2017.
The investigation into Mares’ operation involved a collaborative effort between the Texas Public Safety, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Amarillo Police Department, the Potter County Sheriff’s Office, and the Randall County Sheriff’s Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joshua Frausto and Sean Taylor prosecuted the case, which culminated in Mares’ 14-year prison sentence.
U.S. District Judge Sidney A. Fitzwater handed down the sentence in a federal court in Amarillo. Mares will serve 168 months in federal prison, a staggering 14 years, for his role in the methamphetamine distribution ring.
The Grimy Times has learned that Mares’ operation was just one of many in the Amarillo area, with multiple sources indicating that Mares was a key player in a larger methamphetamine distribution network.
The sentencing of Juan Daniel Mares is a significant blow to the methamphetamine trade in Amarillo and serves as a reminder to those involved in the illicit drug trade that law enforcement is working tirelessly to dismantle their operations.
