OMAHA, NE – Hugo Martha-Mejia, 45, a citizen of Mexico, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced for pushing high-grade methamphetamine onto the streets of Omaha. The sentence, handed down February 3, 2023, by Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr., puts Martha-Mejia away for 78 months – with no chance of parole.
The bust went down on February 11, 2020, at a BP gas station near 24th and Martha streets. A confidential source working with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) arranged a buy, securing one pound of the illicit substance directly from Martha-Mejia. Law enforcement agents documented the entire transaction with both audio and video, building an airtight case against the defendant. The arrest followed immediately after the deal was completed, and a federal grand jury swiftly returned an indictment.
This wasn’t some low-grade street dope. Forensic analysis of the methamphetamine revealed an astounding 94% purity, indicating a direct link to a major supply source. The DEA has been tight-lipped about the origin of the product, but sources within the agency confirm they are investigating potential ties to Mexican cartels. This level of purity suggests Martha-Mejia wasn’t just a local dealer – he was a key player in a larger distribution network.
United States Attorney Steven Russell didn’t mince words when announcing the sentence. “This case demonstrates our commitment to dismantling drug trafficking organizations that prey on our communities,” he stated. While 78 months is a significant sentence, it remains to be seen if it will be enough to disrupt the flow of methamphetamine into Omaha and surrounding areas. The DEA investigation continues, and further arrests are expected.
Following his release from the Bureau of Prisons, Martha-Mejia will face an additional 5 years of supervised release, a period where his movements and activities will be closely monitored. However, for a seasoned operator like Martha-Mejia, supervised release is often little more than a formality. Grimy Times will continue to track this case and report on any further developments.
The DEA spearheaded the investigation, highlighting the agency’s ongoing efforts to combat the methamphetamine epidemic. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by illegal drug trafficking and the dedication of law enforcement to bringing those responsible to justice. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to local authorities or the DEA.
