OMAHA, NEBRASKA – Ivan Avalos Espinoza, 26, a citizen of Mexico, is headed to federal prison for nearly a decade after being convicted of participating in a large-scale methamphetamine conspiracy. On February 6, 2023, United States District Judge Brian C. Buescher handed down a 108-month sentence to Avalos Espinoza. Forget parole – the federal system doesn’t offer it. After serving his time, Avalos Espinoza will face a three-year term of supervised release, a thin leash on a proven criminal.
The bust originated on August 20, 2021, when DEA agents in Omaha intercepted a package at a local shipping store. The destination: an Omaha residence. Inside, agents discovered a hefty 4,097 grams of methamphetamine – enough to poison a community. Rather than immediately raid the location, agents opted for a controlled delivery.
That same day, a DEA agent strategically placed the package at the gate of the target residence. Avalos Espinoza didn’t hesitate. He retrieved the illicit shipment and brought it inside. A subsequent search warrant executed on the residence turned up both Avalos Espinoza and the damning package. The evidence didn’t stop there.
Investigators dug deeper, and digital records recovered from Avalos Espinoza’s cell phone provided a clear trail of communication and coordination, solidifying the case against him and proving his integral role in the drug conspiracy.
