SALT LAKE CITY, UT – A massive haul of methamphetamine and the alleged kingpin behind it are now in federal custody. Manuel Santos-Ramirez, 32, an undocumented Mexican national, stands accused of possessing and intending to distribute a staggering 5,843 grams of the deadly drug within the District of Utah. The bust is the latest escalation in a wider crackdown dubbed “Operation Take Back America.”
The FBI’s Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force had been tracking a drug trafficking organization (DTO) since July 2025. The investigation culminated in a controlled purchase in August, where a man later identified as Santos-Ramirez arrived in a silver Ford F-150. Agents followed him to a Salt Lake City residence, quickly securing a search warrant. What they found was a substantial quantity of methamphetamine – half hidden inside the truck, the other half stashed within the home. The substance purchased during the controlled buy also tested positive for the narcotic.
“This wasn’t a small-time operation,” a source within the Task Force told Grimy Times. “We’re talking about nearly six kilograms of pure meth hitting the streets. Santos-Ramirez wasn’t just holding this for himself.” Law enforcement moved swiftly, arresting Santos-Ramirez, who remains in federal custody pending trial. He was initially charged by complaint on August 28, 2025, and formally indicted by a federal grand jury.
Santos-Ramirez is charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. The prosecution, led by Special Assistant United States Attorney Peter Reichman, is building its case around the evidence seized during the raid and the controlled purchase. His initial appearance on the indictment was September 11, 2025. A three-day jury trial is currently scheduled for November 14, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. in courtroom 7.2 before Senior U.S District Court Judge Clark Waddoups at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City.
Acting United States Attorney Felice John Viti for the District of Utah announced the indictment, framing it as a key component of “Operation Take Back America” – a nationwide initiative aimed at dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and stemming the tide of illegal immigration. The operation combines resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).
It’s important to remember that an indictment is not a conviction. Santos-Ramirez is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. But the evidence suggests a serious player in the regional drug trade, and the Department of Justice is determined to see this case through to the fullest extent of the law.
