Federal authorities have taken a major hit in the war on methamphetamine, with a Mexican national sentenced to six years in prison for his role in a major trafficking operation in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Juan Carlos Nieblas-Ruelas, 28, was sentenced to 72 months in federal prison for his conviction on methamphetamine trafficking charges. Nieblas-Ruelas will be deported after serving his prison sentence, marking a major victory for local law enforcement in their efforts to stem the flow of illicit narcotics into the community.
The case against Nieblas-Ruelas began in November 2015, when he and co-defendant Massiel Segoviano-Fierro, 25, were arrested after attempting to sell approximately ten pounds of methamphetamine to an undercover law enforcement agent. The sting operation was the result of a lengthy investigation by the Albuquerque office of Homeland Security Investigations and the New Mexico State Police.
Nieblas-Ruelas pled guilty to a felony information charging him with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, admitting that he provided the illicit substance to Segoviano-Fierro with the knowledge that it would be sold to another individual.
Segoviano-Fierro, who remains in custody pending a sentencing hearing, faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and will also be deported upon completion of his sentence. The two men were part of a larger conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine in Albuquerque, with Nieblas-Ruelas serving as a key player in the operation.
The case against Nieblas-Ruelas and Segoviano-Fierro is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by methamphetamine trafficking in New Mexico. As the state continues to grapple with the challenges of illicit narcotics, law enforcement agencies and federal prosecutors remain committed to disrupting and dismantling these operations, bringing those responsible to justice and keeping communities safe.
The case was investigated by the Albuquerque office of Homeland Security Investigations and the New Mexico State Police and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David M. Walsh.
