SACRAMENTO, CA – A massive haul of methamphetamine is off the streets thanks to a joint federal operation, but the men responsible are now staring down the barrel of a potential life sentence. Felix Ortiz-Plata, 44, of Stockton, and Anuar Castaneda Ortiz, 29, of Sacramento, both Mexican nationals, admitted to their roles in a sprawling drug trafficking scheme that culminated in the seizure of over 260 pounds of crystal meth.
The bust unfolded on December 5, 2022, when law enforcement officers pulled over Castaneda Ortiz’s vehicle. What they found wasn’t Christmas presents, but a mountain of narcotics. A search revealed more than 260 pounds of pure crystal methamphetamine, neatly packaged into 90 individual plastic bags stashed in the backseat and trunk of the car. This wasn’t a personal stash; it was a wholesale operation.
Ortiz-Plata entered his guilty plea to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine on August 8, 2025, acknowledging his involvement in the larger network. Today, Castaneda Ortiz followed suit, pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine – the direct handling of the deadly cargo. Both men knew exactly what they were moving and the devastation it would cause.
The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), U.S. Forest Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Bureau of Land Management, and the California Highway Patrol, demonstrates the scale of the threat and the resources dedicated to combating it. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hitt is leading the prosecution, determined to see justice served.
U.S. District Judge Dena C. Coggins is scheduled to hand down Ortiz-Plata’s sentence on November 21, 2025. Castaneda Ortiz will face the judge on December 19, 2025. Both defendants are facing a maximum statutory penalty of life in prison, a mandatory minimum of 10 years, and a staggering $10 million fine.
