Meth Ring Busted: WV Trio Linked to VA Supply

ABINGDON, Va. – A significant methamphetamine distribution network stretching across state lines has been cracked, with three West Virginia men now facing federal charges. Terry Headen, Charles “Chuck” Williams, and Taylor Headen, all of Welch, West Virginia, were arrested last week, accused of funneling pounds of meth into the Western District of Virginia. The arrests are the latest in a widening investigation that’s already seen six others plead guilty or face indictment.

Federal prosecutors allege the trio conspired with multiple individuals to possess and distribute substantial quantities of methamphetamine. This isn’t a small-time operation; we’re talking about a network built to move serious weight. Court documents detail how the Virginia-based crew—including Stephen Stewart, of Appalachia, Virginia; Eric Mullins, of Appalachia, Virginia; Gerald McCoy, of Coeburn, Virginia; Danny Dearry, of Coeburn, Virginia; Lisa Poole, of Big Stone Gap, Virginia; and Jonathan Lake, of Artemus, Kentucky—repeatedly crossed state lines to secure their supply.

The scheme, according to investigators, involved trips from the Western District of Virginia into West Virginia where the Headens and Williams provided the methamphetamine. This supply was then brought back to Virginia for redistribution. The operation wasn’t limited to meth either. Fentanyl also appears to have been part of the mix, adding another layer of danger to the streets.

Mullins, McCoy, Poole, and Lake have already admitted guilt to conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine. Mullins went further, pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and an additional methamphetamine charge. Stewart, meanwhile, is facing twelve counts in a federal grand jury indictment, covering methamphetamine, fentanyl, and firearms – suggesting this operation wasn’t shy about packing heat.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) led the investigation, working in conjunction with the Wise County Sheriff’s Office, the Southwest Virginia Drug Task Force, and the West Virginia Southern Regional Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force. These agencies have been working diligently to dismantle this network and get these drugs off the streets. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Carrie Macon and Corey Hall are handling the prosecution.

It’s crucial to remember that an indictment and criminal complaint are not a declaration of guilt. Headen, Williams, and Taylor Headen, along with any defendants who haven’t yet entered a plea, are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But the evidence so far paints a clear picture: this was a sophisticated operation, and authorities are determined to see those responsible held accountable.
