MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – The streets of Eastern Oklahoma are a little less flooded with poison today. Three men – John Lamar Clayton, Brian Lee Steele, and Brandon Leal Castro – have admitted their roles in a large-scale methamphetamine trafficking operation, facing potentially life-altering sentences. The guilty pleas, entered in federal court this week, mark a significant blow to a network that was pumping dangerous drugs into communities.
John Lamar Clayton, 46, of Fort Coffee, Oklahoma, was the first to crack, pleading guilty to one count of Drug Conspiracy on July 16, 2025. Just days later, on July 24th, Brian Lee Steele, 45, also of Fort Coffee, followed suit, admitting guilt to the same charge. The most distant member of the trio, Brandon Leal Castro, 34, hailing from Mexico, also entered a guilty plea to Drug Conspiracy on July 24th, 2025. The weight of the evidence, it seems, proved too much to bear.
Federal prosecutors allege that between October 2024, and November 14, 2024, Clayton, Steele, Castro, and their accomplices knowingly conspired to distribute and possess with intent to distribute a staggering amount of methamphetamine – 500 grams or more. That’s half a kilo of pure poison, enough to ruin countless lives. If convicted at trial, the co-conspirators could have faced even harsher penalties.
The stakes are incredibly high. Conspiracy to distribute 500 or more grams of methamphetamine carries a potential sentence of ten years to life in prison, and a hefty fine of up to $50,000,000. While sentencing is still pending, the gravity of their crimes suggests the judge will not be lenient. They’ll have plenty of time to reflect on their choices behind bars.
This takedown was a multi-agency effort, involving the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the District 16 Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The combined resources of these agencies were crucial in dismantling this operation and bringing these criminals to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jordan Howanitz skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring accountability for these actions.
Currently, Clayton, Steele, and Castro remain in the custody of the United States Marshals Service, awaiting their fate. U.S. Magistrate Judge D. Edward Snow accepted the pleas and has ordered the completion of presentence investigation reports. A U.S. District Court Judge will ultimately determine their sentences, considering sentencing guidelines and statutory factors. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the final outcome. This is just another reminder that the drug trade brings nothing but misery and destruction to our communities.”
