BROWNSVILLE, Texas – In a brazen attempt to smuggle a massive amount of meth into the United States, 21-year-old Jennifer Santamaria has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. According to authorities, Santamaria attempted to make entry into the country through the Gateway International Bridge Port of Entry in Brownsville on January 22.
During inspection, law enforcement discovered anomalies in the vehicle, which led to the discovery of 22 foil-wrapped packages weighing a total of 94.18 kilograms. The packages tested positive for the characteristics of meth, with an estimated street value of $500,000.
Santamaria pleaded guilty to the charges on May 13, and today, U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. handed down the sentence. In handing down the sentence, Judge Rodriguez noted the seriousness of the offense.
The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection, with Assistant U.S. Attorney David Coronado prosecuting the case. Santamaria will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.
