SIoux City, Iowa – In a brazen display of disregard for the law, 40-year-old Chad Hughes put the pedal to the metal, fleeing from law enforcement while in possession of nearly half a pound of methamphetamine on June 24, 2023.
Hughes, a Sioux City native and convicted federal felon, was operating a motorcycle when he made a split-second decision to abandon all caution and flee from authorities, sparking a high-speed chase that spanned multiple cities and states.
According to court records, Hughes’ reckless pursuit took him through Sioux City, Iowa, and North Sioux City, South Dakota, with the fugitive ultimately ditching his motorcycle and a backpack containing the illicit substance to avoid apprehension.
Law enforcement, however, was hot on Hughes’ heels, seizing the backpack and unearthing a treasure trove of incriminating evidence, including methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and sundry items like a lone shoe and lottery tickets.
Hughes’ guilty plea, entered on May 31, 2024, marks the latest chapter in a long and storied history of run-ins with the law for the 40-year-old defendant, who was previously convicted of a federal firearms offense in 2005.
As Hughes awaits sentencing, he’s likely to be keeping his head down, knowing that the penalties for his crimes could be severe. Under federal law, Hughes faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, with a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment, coupled with a $10,000,000 fine and at least five years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
The case, which was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde, was a collaborative effort between the Iowa State Patrol, North Sioux City Police Department, Tri-State Drug Task Force, and a host of other law enforcement agencies.
The case file number is 23-4053, and those interested in further information can access court records through the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa’s online portal.
