BECKLEY, W.Va. – A shocking display of brazen disregard for US immigration laws has come to light with the guilty plea of 35-year-old Mexican national Victor Guevara-De La Paz. In a brazen move, Guevara-De La Paz has admitted to illegally reentering the United States, a serious crime that could land him in federal prison for up to two years.

According to investigators, Guevara-De La Paz was identified through surveillance and located residing in Lewisburg. On May 24, 2017, agents from the Department of Homeland Security stopped Guevara-De La Paz during a traffic stop and confirmed his identity. A routine fingerprint comparison revealed that Guevara-De La Paz had twice been removed from the United States, only to illegally reenter the country both times.

Furthermore, an investigation revealed that Guevara-De La Paz had not formally applied for permission to legally enter the United States, adding further weight to the charges against him. The shocking revelation has sparked outrage among immigration officials and those who are fighting to strengthen the nation’s borders.

Now, Guevara-De La Paz faces a daunting future, with a court date set for January 24, 2018, where he will be sentenced. He is also subject to removal proceedings at the conclusion of the case, which could see him deported back to Mexico.

Assistant United States Attorney Erik S. Goes is in charge of the prosecution, while the investigation was conducted by the Department of Homeland Security. The plea hearing was held before United States District Judge Irene C. Berger.
