Pittsburgh Man Charged with Entering US Illegally
A 47-year-old man from Mexico has been charged with re-entering the United States after being deported multiple times, according to authorities.
Bartolo Fabian-Mendez, a citizen of Mexico, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on one count of illegal re-entry after deportation. The indictment alleges that Fabian-Mendez was removed from the US by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on several occasions between 2010 and 2017.
The indictment states that Fabian-Mendez was deported on January 5, 2010, February 15, 2016, March 16, 2016, November 26, 2016, and June 17, 2017. He was encountered in Verona, Pennsylvania, and taken into custody on October 5, 2017, by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations.
The law provides for a maximum total sentence of two years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case. An indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Fabian-Mendez’s arraignment is pending. The indictment was announced by Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song. The charges against Fabian-Mendez are serious and carry significant penalties. The public is advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will continue to investigate and prosecute individuals who attempt to re-enter the country illegally.
Authorities urge anyone with information about this case to come forward and assist in the investigation. The community is advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
