Mexican National Indicted for Drug Smuggling in Utah

Alfredo Tovar-Ruiz, a 26-year-old Mexican national living in the United States illegally, faces federal charges for drug smuggling after authorities in Utah seized over 15,000 fentanyl pills and nearly 2 kilograms of heroin. The charges were announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Felice John Viti for the District of Utah.

Tovar-Ruiz was indicted by a federal grand jury following an investigation by the Davis Metro Narcotics Strike Force. Detectives had been probing a drug trafficking organization since July, leading to the seizure of fentanyl and heroin from Tovar-Ruiz’s residence in West Valley City, Utah.

On August 20, 2025, detectives stopped Tovar-Ruiz as he approached an associated vehicle. A search warrant led to the discovery of 84 grams of fentanyl pills (840 pills) and 29 grams of heroin at the scene. An additional 1,930 grams of heroin and 1,478 grams of fentanyl pills were found during a subsequent search of Tovar-Ruiz’s home.

The defendant is charged with possession of fentanyl and heroin with intent to distribute. His initial appearance is set for September 2, 2025, in Salt Lake City. This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide effort to combat drug trafficking and transnational criminal organizations.

Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Reichman is prosecuting the case, which is being investigated by the Davis Metro Narcotics Strike Force and the FBI Salt Lake City Field Office.

An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
