Oscar Ayala-Arizmendi, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, Idaho 2014

BOISE – A shocking case of firearm possession has shaken the community, with Oscar Ayala-Arizmendi, a 36-year-old Mexican national, being sentenced to 12 months in prison for violating federal law.

Ayala-Arizmendi, from Guerrero, Mexico, was found guilty of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, a crime that will see him deported at the end of his prison term.

According to U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson, Ayala-Arizmendi will serve the full 12-month sentence, which is a clear message to those in the country illegally that possessing a firearm is a serious offense.

The investigation began in May 2014, when Twin Falls, Idaho law enforcement officers searched Ayala-Arizmendi’s residence on suspicion of another offense. What they found was a Maadi, Cadet model, 9mm semi-automatic pistol, manufactured and shipped from Egypt in interstate and foreign commerce.

The discovery was the result of cooperative law enforcement efforts between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and the Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office.

U.S. District Chief Judge B. Lynn Winmill also ordered the forfeiture of the firearm, a clear indication that the court takes firearm possession seriously.

As Ayala-Arizmendi begins his prison sentence, locals are left to wonder how someone in the country illegally was able to possess a firearm in the first place. The case highlights the need for stricter laws and better enforcement to prevent such crimes from occurring in the future.
