Mexican National Sentenced for ID Theft
A Mexican national has been sentenced to seven months in prison for using a Social Security number that didn’t belong to him to obtain a Louisiana identification card.
Defendant’s Name and Sentence Revealed
U.S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance handed down the sentence to 40-year-old Sergio Galvez-Velazquez. He was previously convicted of illegally using a Social Security number.
According to court records, Galvez-Velazquez obtained a Louisiana Identification Card from the DMV office in Houma using the stolen Social Security number.
Following his imprisonment, Galvez-Velazquez will be turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for removal proceedings.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite praised the United States Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, for their work in investigating the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Spiro G. Latsis was in charge of the prosecution. Galvez-Velazquez was ordered to pay a special assessment of $100.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting sensitive information and the consequences of using someone else’s identity.
