CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A Mexican national residing in Boone County has been handed a four-year, nine-month prison sentence for his role in a federal methamphetamine crime. Leonel Vivian Castellanos, 28, pleaded guilty to distribution of methamphetamine in November 2015.
Castellanos admitted to distributing approximately 500 grams of methamphetamine to informants in Kanawha and Boone counties between May 12 and May 19, 2015. An additional 50 grams of methamphetamine was found at his residence in Boone County on May 21, 2015. That same day, a search warrant in Kanawha County uncovered another 500 grams of methamphetamine that Castellanos admitted to distributing.
The investigation was conducted by the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team, Homeland Security Investigations, the Kanawha Bureau of Investigation, and the South Charleston Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Rada Herrald handled the prosecution. United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr. imposed the sentence.
The methamphetamine distribution ring operated by Castellanos posed a significant threat to the community. The distribution of large quantities of methamphetamine can lead to addiction, violence, and other serious consequences. The prison sentence handed down to Castellanos is a reflection of the severity of the crime.
The conviction and sentence serve as a reminder of the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region. The cooperation between local, state, and federal agencies is crucial in bringing those responsible for these crimes to justice.
