A Mexican woman, Rosa Nevarez-Fallad, age 60, has been sentenced to three months in federal prison for using a fraudulent Social Security card to obtain employment. The sentence was handed down on February 14, 2018, following her guilty plea to one count of unlawful use of an identification document.
Nevarez-Fallad, a lawful permanent resident of the United States residing in Fremont, Nebraska, admitted to using a Social Security card that she knew was forged or unlawfully obtained. This admission came after she and her husband, Fernando Nevarez-Carreon, fled Nebraska in 2016 to avoid sentencing for conspiracy to distribute counterfeit documents and aggravated identity theft.
In July 2016, the couple completed employment paperwork in Farley, Iowa, using false names and identification cards with stolen Social Security Numbers of U.S. citizens. Nevarez-Carreon managed to evade capture until March 2017 when he was arrested at his job in Farley. He was sentenced to over six years in prison in June 2017 and is currently awaiting sentencing in the Northern District of Iowa for one count of unlawful use of an identification document.
U.S. District Court Judge Linda R. Reade sentenced Nevarez-Fallad to three months’ imprisonment at a hearing in Cedar Rapids. She must also serve a three-year term of supervised release following her prison term. There is no parole available in the federal system.
Nevarez-Fallad is currently being held by the United States Marshal’s Service until she can be transported to a federal prison to begin her sentence.
The investigation and prosecution of this case were conducted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt, the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General, and the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations.
