A heinous crime has been punished in Brownsville, Texas, where 33-year-old Mexican national Juan Francisco Meza-Chavez has been sentenced to 97 months in federal prison for possession of child pornography.
Meza-Chavez pleaded guilty to the charges on September 5, 2023, and has been ordered to pay $45,000 in restitution to the victims. U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera handed down the sentence, which also includes 20 years of supervised release following Meza-Chavez’s prison term.
The investigation into Meza-Chavez began in May 2022, when authorities identified his IP address as one of several sharing child pornography on the BitTorrent network. On October 13, 2022, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Meza-Chavez’s residence, seizing numerous electronic devices capable of storing child pornography.
A forensic analysis of the devices revealed 40 videos and 11 images of child pornography, solidifying the case against Meza-Chavez. The FBI conducted the investigation, which was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ana C. Cano prosecuted the case, which highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the Department of Justice in combating these heinous crimes. Meza-Chavez will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility, where he will serve out his sentence.
As part of his supervised release, Meza-Chavez will be required to comply with numerous restrictions designed to limit his access to children and the internet. He will also be required to register as a sex offender, ensuring that his actions will have long-term consequences. The sentence serves as a reminder that those who engage in child pornography will be held accountable for their actions.
The Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood initiative has been instrumental in combating child sexual exploitation and abuse.
