Miami’s arms kingpin, Andres Campo, 26, was handed a life sentence today by U.S. District Court Judge Cecilia Altonaga for his role in a monstrous plot of murder and firearms trafficking. Campo, convicted on all counts of a 12-count indictment, was found guilty of obstruction of justice by murder, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, and numerous export violation charges.
Campo’s reign of terror began when he orchestrated the shipment of AR-15 rifles and .50 caliber rifles to Colombia. He employed straw purchasers to acquire firearms from legal dealers in Florida, disassembled them into smaller pieces, and shipped them to his organization’s Colombian contacts.
The investigation took a chilling turn in 2009 when Erik Comesana, one of Campo’s employees, was detained by the ATF. Comesana’s subsequent murder while in police custody shook the law enforcement community, as it became clear that Campo had grown increasingly paranoid about his potential cooperation with authorities.
After Comesana’s death, Campo and his accomplice Carlos Rios fled Florida but were ultimately apprehended in a Miami motel parking lot. During this time, investigators discovered that Campo was deeply involved in the shipment of weapons to Colombia, even as he was on the run.
The jury also found the murder of Comesana premeditated, a testament to the cold-blooded nature of Campo’s criminal enterprise. Rios, who previously pleaded guilty to participating in the murder, has already been sentenced to life in prison. The relentless pursuit of justice has finally brought an end to Campo’s reign of terror, ensuring that Miami’s streets are a little safer today.
