GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Jessie Wooden, a 29-year-old Miami resident, was today sentenced to 12 years in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Donald L. Graham for the armed robbery of a jewelry store in downtown Miami’s Seybold Building.
The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Benjamin G. Greenberg; Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle; FBI Special Agent in Charge George L. Piro; and Miami Police Chief Rodolfo Llanes made the announcement after Wooden entered a guilty plea to conspiring to commit an armed robbery, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
Records show that on October 29, 2016, Wooden and an accomplice robbed the jewelry store, taking approximately 35 watches and over $250,000. During the heist, Wooden brandished a firearm while his partner bound the victim’s hands and feet.
In a dramatic chase on January 11, 2017, Wooden attempted to evade capture after refusing to stop for law enforcement during a traffic stop. He sideswiped an officer’s vehicle and eventually crashed, leading to his arrest. A loaded firearm and over 100 rounds of ammunition were found in the car and at Wooden’s residence.
Greenberg praised the collaborative efforts of the FBI, MPD, and the U.S. Marshals Service in bringing Wooden to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Marianne Curtis from the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case.
