Miami Woman Pleads Guilty to Mail Theft & ID Fraud

MIAMI – Rodelyn Lamour, a 26-year-old Miami resident, has pleaded guilty to a multi-faceted identity theft scheme that targeted apartment complex mailboxes. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, Lamour and her co-conspirator, Nestor Herrera, orchestrated a year-long campaign of mail theft from various Miami-Dade County complexes.

Lamour admitted to using a stolen Postal Service key to access cluster mailboxes and steal correspondence containing debit cards. She then utilized these cards for cash withdrawals, postal money orders, and wire transfers, amassing $45,729.17 in fraudulent tax refunds over a period of one year.

Wifredo A. Ferrer, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, praised the investigative efforts of IRS-CI and USPIS, which led to Lamour’s arrest. Assistant U.S. Attorney Vanessa Snyder is prosecuting the case, with sentencing scheduled for July 17, 2014.

The charges against Lamour include conspiracy to commit mail theft, possession of a Postal Service key, mail theft, use of unauthorized access devices, and aggravated identity theft. The severity of these charges reflects the sophistication and breadth of the criminal enterprise she was involved in.

While details of the case are concerning, they also highlight the diligence of law enforcement agencies in combating such crimes. The public is reminded to remain vigilant about mail security and identity protection.
