A Cedar Rapids man has been charged with the most heinous of crimes, one that shakes the very foundations of our society. Michael Bordman, 22, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been accused of child sexual exploitation and distribution, receipt, and possession of child pornography.
According to an Indictment unsealed on October 7, 2016, in United States District Court in Cedar Rapids, Bordman allegedly committed these crimes between August 2015 and July 2016. The charges are nothing short of devastating and highlight the importance of our role in bringing perpetrators to justice.
If convicted, Bordman faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of 90 years’ imprisonment, a $1,000,000 fine, a $400 special assessment, and at least five years and up to life on supervised release following any imprisonment. These penalties serve as a stark reminder of the severity of these crimes and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable.
Bordman appeared for a detention hearing on October 11, 2016, in federal court in Cedar Rapids and was held without bond. His next appearance for trial is set for December 12, 2016. As with any criminal case, a charge is merely an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel and is being investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and Homeland Security Investigations. The collaboration and dedication of these agencies are crucial in the fight against child sexual exploitation and abuse.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children and to identify and rescue victims.
The safety and well-being of our children must be our top priority. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who prey on our children are held accountable for their crimes. We urge anyone with information about child sexual exploitation to come forward and report it to the authorities.
