GREAT FALLS – In a shocking turn of events, a 24-year-old Poplar resident has admitted to stabbing a woman in the back, leaving her with life-threatening injuries.
Michael Cody Wolf, 24, pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a crime that carries a maximum 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.
The incident occurred on March 20, 2018, when the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call at a Poplar apartment on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. Wolf was taken into custody at the scene and advised of his rights.
According to the victim, she felt something hit her in the back and realized she had been stabbed. She was flown to Billings Clinic for treatment and suffered life-threatening injuries.
Wolf told an officer that he “kinda snapped,” implying a possible mental health crisis at the time of the stabbing. The victim revealed that Wolf had been out of his mental health medication for four days prior to the incident.
U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris presided over the case and set sentencing for June 27. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paulette Stewart prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office, the Fort Peck Tribal Police, and the FBI.
Wolf is currently detained and faces a maximum 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of violent crime and the importance of addressing mental health issues.
