Montana Sheriff’s Deputy Rescues Kidnapped Baby
In a heart-pounding display of bravery, Missoula County Sheriff’s Deputy Ross Jessop saved the life of a kidnapped baby in July 2018. The infant’s father, in a fit of rage, had taken his girlfriend’s son and fled in a vehicle, leaving the baby for dead in a million-acre forest.
Deputy Jessop, an 11-year veteran of the department, was part of the search team that combed the forest for hours, following the suspect’s erratic statements. His instincts eventually led him to a faint whimper, and he found the baby boy, alive and uninjured, lying face down on the forest floor.
The baby was left for nine hours in 44-degree temperatures, a dire situation that could have ended in tragedy. Deputy Jessop’s quick thinking and dedication to duty undoubtedly saved the child’s life.
At a ceremony in Washington, Attorney General William P. Barr honored Deputy Jessop with the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service in Policing, recognizing his exceptional work in saving the life of the kidnapped baby.
U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme praised Deputy Jessop’s determination and commitment to public safety, saying, ‘Because of Deputy Jessop’s determination and commitment to public safety, this baby boy is alive, despite being left for dead for about nine hours in 44-degree temperatures.’
The Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service in Policing honors law enforcement officers and deputies who demonstrate exceptional efforts in policing, including criminal investigations, field operations, and innovations in community policing. This year’s award recognized 19 law enforcement officers and deputies from 12 jurisdictions across the country.
The recipients of the award have demonstrated active engagement with their communities, working to prevent, intervene in, and respond to crime and public safety issues. Their selfless work and dedication to duty make them true heroes in the eyes of the public.
