K. Jeffery Knapp, a 42-year-old Montana City man, was found guilty of a firearms violation by a federal jury. The conviction marks a significant blow to community safety, say authorities.
According to U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme, Knapp was charged with being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. The charge stems from a search warrant served at Knapp’s home on April 3, where law enforcement agents discovered 16 firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
Among the firearms found were two pistols discovered on what appeared to be Knapp’s side of the bed. The discovery raised suspicions that Knapp knowingly and illegally possessed the firearms. Further investigation revealed that Knapp had been convicted of two felonies in Colorado in 1994.
The case against Knapp was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Bartleson. The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with assistance from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
U.S. Attorney Alme praised the efforts of the prosecution team, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for their work on the case. ‘Felons who possess firearms are a threat to community safety,’ Alme stated. ‘Mr. Knapp’s conviction sends the message that persons illegally possessing firearms will be held responsible.’
Knapp faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, and three years of supervised release. His sentencing has been set for April 16, 2020.
The conviction serves as a warning to those who would seek to disregard the law and possess firearms illegally. As U.S. Attorney Alme emphasized, the consequences of such actions will be severe.
