A carjacking gone wrong has led to a 20-year prison sentence for a Louisville man. Michael Dewitt, 31, was sentenced to 20 years and 5 months in federal prison for carjacking resulting in death.
On March 1, 2021, Dewitt committed a carjacking at gunpoint on a 2011 Ford F350 from its owner in Simpsonville, Kentucky.
During the immediate flight from the carjacking, and while still in possession of the stolen truck, Dewitt collided with a vehicle on Dixie Highway in Louisville, causing the death of a minor victim.
Dewitt was also found to have controlled substances in his system at the time of the crash.
This case was investigated by the FBI Louisville Field Office, the Louisville Metro Police Department, and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Robert Bonar and Mac Shannon prosecuted this case.

There is no parole in the federal system.
