Arson Plot Foiled in Buffalo’s Old First Ward
A 64-year-old Buffalo man has been sentenced to 12 months of home detention for his role in a 2011 arson conspiracy. Michael Fijal, a former bank employee, conspired with others to burn down a duplex at 179 Mackinaw Street in May 2011.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy C. Lynch, Fijal withdrew money from a local bank to pay an accomplice to burn the building. The fire occurred on May 22, 2011.
Fijal’s sentencing is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, in collaboration with the Buffalo Fire Department.
The defendant was ordered to pay restitution totaling $119,312.05.
