Michael Jamal Tucker, a Roanoke man, is headed to federal prison for 133 months after being sentenced on charges tied to cocaine distribution and illegal firearm possession. The sentence, handed down today in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia, marks the end of a case rooted in drug-fueled violence and repeat criminal behavior.
Tucker pled guilty in August 2016 to one count of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and cocaine base, and one count of being a previously convicted felon in illegal possession of a firearm. The charges stem from a coordinated investigation that exposed a local drug network feeding addiction and instability in the Roanoke area.
At today’s hearing in Roanoke, federal prosecutors emphasized the danger posed by armed individuals trafficking drugs in residential communities. United States Attorney John P. Fishwick Jr. reiterated the need for aggressive prosecution: “We must continue to be vigilant in not only prosecuting those individuals who distribute illicit drugs but also by supporting proven and effective treatment and prevention programs.”
The probe was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, working alongside the Virginia State Police, Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, and Pulaski Police Department. Their joint efforts dismantled a supply chain that had been operating under the radar for months.
Assistant United States Attorney Ashley B. Neese prosecuted the case for the federal government, securing a sentence that reflects the severity of Tucker’s crimes. As a previously convicted felon, his possession of a firearm carried added penalties under federal law.
Tucker’s 133-month sentence sends a clear message: those who traffic drugs and carry illegal guns will face serious time behind bars. The case underscores ongoing federal and local collaboration to target violent crime and drug networks in Southwest Virginia.
