On April 1, 2021, Michael Jones, a Maryland resident, was charged with multiple counts of violent crimes in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.
The charges, which dated back to 2020, included 10 counts of carjacking, 5 counts of robbery, and 2 counts of assault with a deadly weapon, according to court documents.
The investigation into Jones’ alleged crimes began in October 2020, when local authorities received multiple reports of carjackings and robberies in the Baltimore area.
Police identified Jones as a suspect after reviewing security footage from the crime scenes, which showed a man matching Jones’ description committing the crimes.
Jones was subsequently arrested on January 15, 2021, and has been held without bail since then.
Prosecutors alleged that Jones had used a firearm in at least one of the robberies, which led to additional charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The trial began on October 15, 2022, and lasted for two weeks, with prosecutors presenting evidence and testimony from witnesses who claimed to have seen Jones committing the crimes.
On October 31, 2022, the jury delivered a guilty verdict on all counts, and Jones was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on December 5, 2022, by U.S. District Judge Deborah K. Chasanow.
