OCALA, FL – Michael Latrelle Simpson, 23, is looking at a decade behind bars after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The feds say Simpson, already saddled with a rap sheet, was caught with a handgun during a routine traffic stop last year.
The incident unfolded January 26, 2022, when officers pulled over the vehicle for an unspecified traffic infraction. During the search, a handgun was found near where Simpson was sitting. Investigators later confirmed the weapon bore Simpson’s DNA on key components – the magazine, slide, and sights. It’s a clear violation of federal law prohibiting convicted felons from owning firearms or ammunition.
Simpson’s prior convictions paint a picture of escalating trouble. Court records show he’s previously been convicted of battery on detention staff, felony battery, and even fleeing from law enforcement with reckless disregard for public safety. This latest charge adds to a growing pattern of disregard for the law, according to federal prosecutors.
U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced the guilty plea, stating Simpson now faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison. While a sentencing date hasn’t been set, the government is pushing for a substantial penalty, given Simpson’s history. The case originated from a July 19, 2022, federal grand jury indictment.
The investigation was a joint effort between the FBI and the Ocala Police Department, highlighting the increasing collaboration between federal and local agencies on gun crime. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Robert E. Bodnar, Jr., and Sarah Janette Swartzberg are handling the prosecution.
Federal officials are framing the case as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods,” a broader initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across the country. The program emphasizes community partnerships and strategic enforcement. Whether it will truly make a dent in Ocala’s crime rate remains to be seen, but the feds are touting it as a key component in their efforts.
