Michael Murray, Mail Theft, Massachusetts 2025

Boston, Massachusetts – In a shocking case of corruption, former United States Postal Service (USPS) employee Michael Murray, 38, of Lynn, Massachusetts, was sentenced to 30 months’ probation yesterday in federal court in Boston for the theft of mail and theft of government funds.

The crime, which occurred from approximately September 2022 through July 2023, saw Murray, who worked as a USPS postal clerk at the Beach Street Post Office in Revere and the Melrose Post Office, use his official position to steal the contents of hundreds of pieces of mail entrusted to him.

According to court records, Murray stole gift cards, cash, and checks totaling approximately $3,422, and also negotiated USPS money orders for his own use, totaling approximately $5,131.

Murray pleaded guilty to one count of theft of mail matter by an employee and one count of theft of government money in January 2025. He was indicted by a federal grand jury in April 2024.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Dustin Chao, Chief of the Public Corruption & Special Prosecutions Unit, with the cooperation of United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Matthew Modafferi, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General, Northeast Area Office.

Murray was also ordered to pay $8,553 in restitution and forfeit $5,130.

The sentencing of Michael Murray serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in public institutions and the consequences of corruption.
