A Fairmont man has been convicted of mail fraud in a scheme that netted him $41,000 in insurance settlements.
Michael Sine, 34, pled guilty to one count of Mail Fraud, according to Acting United States Attorney Betsy Steinfeld Jividen.
The scheme, which took place between May 2013 and October 2013 in Marion County, involved a staged vehicle accident, fake injuries, and false insurance claims.
Sine admitted to participating in the scheme and filing false insurance claims, which resulted in a $41,000 settlement.
He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which will be based on the seriousness of the offenses and Sine’s prior criminal history.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew R. Cogar prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, with assistance from the West Virginia Insurance Commission Office of Inspector General and the United States Postal Inspection Service.
U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley presided over the case.
