CHICAGO, Illinois – A Lindenhurst man, MICHAEL SUOPYS, 28, has been ordered detained in federal custody after allegedly manufacturing explosive devices and keeping them in the bedroom of his home.
According to a federal complaint, Suopys built two pipe bombs by filling a metal pipe with Nitrocellulose and adding a wick. The devices were kept in his Lindenhurst home.
The complaint alleges that Suopys knowingly possessed an unregistered destructive device, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
A detention hearing is scheduled for June 15, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Sidney Schenkier.
The federal charge was announced by Zachary T. Fardon, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, along with Michael J. Anderson, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the FBI.
The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt. Suopys is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Hiller.
The case is part of a larger investigation involving federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, which successfully identified and interrupted the threat described in the complaint.
A separate charge of possessing bombs containing an explosive substance, a Class 3 felony, was dismissed in Lake County Circuit Court.
