Michelle Warner, a 57-year-old woman from Alcester, South Dakota, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for her role in a wire fraud scheme.
According to court documents, Warner was convicted of wire fraud for her actions between June 1, 2018, and May 17, 2022, while she was employed as a bookkeeper/accountant and later as business administrator for Heartland Counseling Services.
During this time, Warner fraudulently paid herself unauthorized payroll payments and used the funds for her own purposes. She also used her employer’s credit card without authority for her own personal use.
Warner was indicted by a federal grand jury in May 2023 and pleaded guilty to the charges on March 20, 2024.
U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier handed down the sentence on August 19, 2024, which includes two years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100, and restitution in the amount of $261,066.09 to Heartland Counseling Services.
The case was investigated by the FBI, U.S. Attorney’s Office, Union County Sheriff’s Office, and the South Sioux City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ann M. Hoffman prosecuted the case.
Warner has been allowed to self-report to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service on September 16, 2024.
