South Bend, IN – Marcus Edwards, 38, of Benton Harbor, MI, was handed a 154-month federal prison sentence by United States District Court Judge Jon E. DeGuilio, according to U.S. Attorney Thomas L. Kirsch II.
The judge’s chambers echoed with the weighty punishment for the admitted crimes of robbery, carjacking, and brandishing a firearm during a violent crime. Edwards stood before DeGuilio after pleading guilty to orchestrating a brazen hotel heist and carjacking in South Bend on March 3, 2016.
“Edwards and his co-conspirator terrorized an innocent clerk with a shotgun, demanding cash,” Kirsch stated. “Their spree didn’t end there; they followed a vehicle to a local residence, pointing their weapon at drivers and passengers before making off with the car.”
Documents reveal that Edwards’ co-defendant, Jerricka Johnson, was sentenced in May 2017 to 70 months for her part in the crime. Johnson’s sentence, while shorter, underscores the severity of the offenses committed by both individuals.
The FBI led the investigation into the case, with substantial support from the South Bend Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Joel R. Gabrielse prosecuted the case, ensuring justice was served for the victims.
Edwards’ sentence includes 154 months in federal prison followed by two years of supervised release, a justifiable punishment for his role in these heinous crimes.
