Michigan Man Gets 3 Years for Bomb Plot Against Satanic Temple

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Luke Isaac Terpstra, 31, of Grant, Michigan, is headed to federal prison for three years after admitting to a chilling plot to attack the Satanic Temple. U.S. District Judge Robert J. Jonker handed down the 36-month sentence today, along with a $750 fine and a $100 special assessment. Terpstra pleaded guilty in April to possession of an unregistered destructive device – essentially, building a bomb.

According to court documents, Terpstra wasn’t just tinkering in his garage. In September 2023, he packed up several homemade IEDs, a shotgun, an AR-15 rifle, and ammunition and drove from Grant, Michigan, all the way to Salem, Massachusetts. His target? The Satanic Temple. The devices weren’t sophisticated, but they were undeniably dangerous: containers rigged with coins or rifle ammunition, secured with cannon fuse.

“The sentence in this case is significant and it reinforces that individuals who build bombs with the intent to injure innocent civilians and destroy property will be held accountable,” declared U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Timothy VerHey. “This conduct puts us all at risk, and my office will hold those who commit such crimes accountable.” It’s a statement that rings hollow to those who see lenient sentences for other violent offenders, but the feds are making a point here – messing with explosives gets you serious time.

The FBI Detroit Field Office took the lead on the investigation, with crucial support from the Grant Police Department, Kent County Sheriff’s Office, and Michigan State Police. Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office, emphasized the gravity of the situation. “The sentencing of Luke Terpstra sends a clear and powerful message: those who threaten the safety of our nation will be held fully accountable under the law,” Gibson stated. “This outcome reflects our steadfast commitment to protecting the American people.”

Terpstra confessed he constructed the IEDs in late summer or early fall of 2023, specifically with the intent to set the Satanic Temple ablaze. While the Temple itself wasn’t damaged, Terpstra’s actions created a clear and present danger. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie M. Carowan successfully prosecuted the case, ensuring Terpstra faced the consequences of his actions. This wasn’t just about building a bomb; it was about a targeted act of violence fueled by hate.

The case serves as a stark reminder that domestic extremism remains a potent threat. While the details are disturbing, the swift action by federal and local law enforcement prevented a potentially devastating attack. Terpstra’s 36-month sentence might not undo the fear he intended to instill, but it sends a message – build a bomb, and you will pay the price. The investigation highlights the continued need for vigilance and collaboration between agencies to combat violent extremism and protect the public.
