Michigan Man Jailed for Elk Smuggling

A Michigan man has been sentenced for his role in a brazen wildlife trafficking operation. Jerry P. Londo, age 66, was found guilty of Unlawful Transportation of Wildlife in Interstate Commerce and handed down a harsh sentence.

On September 25, 2013, U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy imposed a 25-month term of probation, a $1,000 fine, $5,000 in restitution, and a $25 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The case against Londo stems from an incident that took place in October 2011 in Pennington County, South Dakota. Londo was accused of tagging an elk with a Wyoming tag, even though it had been shot and killed in South Dakota. The illegally tagged elk was then transported to Wyoming.

The investigation into Londo’s wildlife trafficking operation was a collaborative effort between the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman prosecuted the case.

According to authorities, Londo’s actions not only put the elk at risk but also undermined the integrity of the wildlife management system. The conviction serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of wildlife trafficking.

Londo’s sentence sends a clear message that wildlife trafficking will not be tolerated. The case highlights the importance of interagency cooperation in enforcing wildlife laws and protecting the environment.

As the investigation into Londo’s activities continues, it remains to be seen if others will be brought to justice. One thing is certain, however, wildlife trafficking will be met with swift and severe consequences.
