The Middle District of Georgia is receiving a hefty dose of crime prevention funding, courtesy of the federal government. US Attorney G.F. Peterman, III announced that $372,584 in Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Grant funds have been awarded to eight local agencies.

The grant program allows states and local governments to support a wide range of activities aimed at preventing and controlling crime, based on their specific needs. These funds can be used for initiatives such as law enforcement programs, prosecution and court programs, prevention and education programs, and more.

The 2016 JAG award recipients in the Middle District of Georgia are as follows:

Baldwin County: $17,567

Macon-Bibb County: $87,417

City of Warner Robins: $31,639

City of Valdosta: $16,850

City of Albany: $69,820

Columbus Consolidated Government: $93,124

Athens-Clarke County Unified Government: $37,046

Questions regarding this funding should be directed to Pamela Lightsey, Public Information Officer, at (478) 621-2603.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program is a vital tool in the fight against crime. By providing funding to local agencies, we can empower them to take a proactive approach to crime prevention and make their communities safer.

However, some critics argue that the funding is simply a drop in the bucket, and that more needs to be done to address the root causes of crime in these communities.

Regardless of the criticism, one thing is certain – the $372,584 in funding will go a long way in supporting local law enforcement and crime prevention efforts in the Middle District of Georgia.
