California – A Mexican national has been sentenced to over 3 years in prison for possessing nearly 200,000 fentanyl pills with the intent to distribute.
Miguel Obed Romero Reyes, 26, of Sinaloa, Mexico, was sentenced to three years and five months in prison by U.S. District Judge Kirk Sherriff in a federal court in Fresno, California.
According to court documents, Romero Reyes was pulled over by law enforcement officers while driving north on Interstate 5 in Fresno County. He was found to be in possession of a large duffel bag containing 48 pounds of blue counterfeit M-30 pills in 20 separate 1-gallon Ziploc bags.
The investigation revealed that Romero Reyes had picked up the pills in Arizona and was transporting them to Washington state for distribution. The pills, which totaled over 200,000, weighed 21.8 kilograms.
The case was the result of an investigation by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cody S. Chapple prosecuted the case.
Acting U.S. Attorney Kimberly A. Sanchez announced Romero Reyes’s sentencing, stating that the defendant’s actions posed a significant threat to the community. “This sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense and the need to hold those who engage in fentanyl trafficking accountable for their actions,” Sanchez said.
Fentanyl trafficking has become a major concern in the United States, with the synthetic opioid being responsible for thousands of overdose deaths each year. Romero Reyes’s sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in this type of crime.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations commend the work of law enforcement agencies in preventing the distribution of fentanyl and keeping communities safe.
